Where did they get silver half dollars in 1940?
Two mints produced silver half dollars in 1940 and San Francisco is identified by the mintmark they placed on their coins. Philadelphia the main mint did not use mintmarks. Check the reverse, close to the rim for the small “S” for San Francisco. Superior 1940 Half Dollar Value
When did the Mint change the side of the half dollar?
In 1968, however, the location was changed by the Mint Director to the obverse (front) side of the coins. There were some exceptions, however, including the 1838-O Capped Bust half dollar and the 1916-D and 1916-S Walking Liberty half dollar.
