What was the first fair trade product?
The first fair trade agricultural products were coffee and tea, quickly followed by dried fruits, cocoa, sugar, fruit juices, rice, spices and nuts. Coffee quickly became the main growth engine behind fair trade: between 25 and 50% of the total alternative trading organization turnover in 2005 came from coffee sales.

How did Fair Trade begin? The Fair Trade movement began back in 1946 when a woman named Edna Ruth Byler began importing needlecrafts from low income women in South America. Closely followed by SERRV International, in 1949, both organizations had a goal to develop fair trade supply chains in developing countries.

Is Starbucks Fair Trade?
We have offered Fairtrade coffee since 2000. In 2011 34.3 million pounds (8.0 percent) of our coffee purchases were Fairtrade certified, making us one of the largest purchasers of Fairtrade certified coffee in the world. We also purchased 9.6 million pounds (2.2 percent) of certified organic coffee in 2011.
