This is arguably the best skiing in Austria and one of Europe’s top ski destinations. Lech is atmospheric, pretty, smart and sophisticated with a friendly atmosphere. Despite its glitzy image, Lech is still a true Austrian alpine village and its people seem genuinely pleased to meet you.
This sunny resort sits at the junction of two impressive valleys and has some stunning mountain views and spectacular sunsets.
Lech has an extremely high standard of accommodation, regardless of whether you choose one of the resort’s renowned first class hotels, a smaller cosy option, or one of the spacious self-catering apartments there is something for everyone. The chic après ski scene is played out along the main street with vibrant music coming from the lively bars from late afternoon. However, the sophisticated nightlife is usually contained to the hotels’ clubs and bars.
The village is attractive with its gurgling river, old bridges and traditional old church. The serious shoppers will be disappointed with the lack of seductive shopping but compensation can be found in its charming cafés that serve delicious hot chocolate and apple strudel.
The resort offers good early snow and you can ski well into April. It is a perfect destination for the pre-Christmas warm up or the late ski holiday. Guests enjoy pampered skiing, starting with the ten heated chairlifts, taking you to the long, wide open runs that are ideal for snowboarding and intermediate skiing. Queuing is rare due to an up-to-date lift system and the restriction on the number of lift passes sold. Skiing is very snow-sure and, even in rare times of snow drought, you can be fairly sure of skiing back every day due to snow making on the home slopes. The Arlberg region’s famous 22km White Ring route will test your stamina and offers a fun day’s excursion. There are limited off-piste routes which are marked on the piste map, however, experts will benefit on the unmarked pistes from skiing with a guide.
A few rustic mountain restaurants are to be found around the resorts, many with sunny terraces and amazing views as well as the large sunny terraces at Oberlech and Zurs.
For the non-skier Lech and Oberlech provide a variety of activities including extensive marked walking trails, ice skating, tobogganing and sleigh rides and for the less energetic the high-end store Strolz has is a popular champagne bar.
Flexenbahn cable –
The new cableway link between Zürs and Stuben/Rauz, the Trittkopfbahn I and II, and Albonabahn II cableways were built in 2016. From Zürs, the Trittkopfbahn I leads to the new intermediate station, where skiers may either continue to the new top station of Trittkopfbahn II or use the new Flexenbahn to carry on to Alpe Rauz in Stuben. From here, the other new cableway, Albonabahn II, invites skiers to continue to Stuben.
In addition, skiers starting out from Alpe Rauz can conveniently explore the St. Christoph and St. Anton skiing areas.
In the opposite direction, you can use the Flexenbahn from Stuben/Rauz to the intermediate station and/or the top station of the Trittkopfbahn and hence continue to Zürs. From here, skiers can continue to Lech and on to Warth-Schröcken. This makes the Arlberg skiing area the largest contiguous skiing area in Austria, with 305 km of downhill slopes and 87 lifts and cableways available to winter sports enthusiasts. Now all locations in the Arlberg ski area can be reached easily and comfortably on skis.
