La Thuile is a super little resort, nestled in the Aosta Valley, a short distance from Courmayeur. It has an impressive ski area that is linked with La Rosière in France and offers good, high altitude skiing, spectacular scenery and breathtaking views of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Mont Blanc.
Although this informal resort is somewhat less sophisticated than its neighbour of Courmayeur it has a relaxed atmosphere and is perfect for those seeking a quieter, get away from it all break. This is an ideal resort for both families and individuals.
Shopping is limited, but that’s not what you would come here for. There is a selection of good value restaurants offering traditional Italian fare, as well as a few friendly bars. The unspoilt nature of La Thuile means that it retains some of its distinct character.
It has a very efficient lift system where queuing is rarely a problem and its on-mountain facilities include some good new restaurants. Its mainly east-facing slopes ensures an excellent snow record, and has long wide ski runs with skiing back to the village
La Thuile an ideal choice for all standards of skier. For beginners there are two easy slopes, served by a travelator at village level or the runs at Les Suches which are located at higher level. For intermediate skiers the area is one of the most extensive areas in the Aosta Valley. For the more advanced skier although limited there are a few black runs, however there is plenty of scope with some fine off-piste areas above the Piccolo St. Bérnard pass and the possibility of heli-skiing on the Rutor glacier or take the challenge of the unforgettable 12km-long Valley Blanche descent down to Chamonix which is a short bus ride away at Punta Helbroner.
An added bonus is the free lift passes for children under 8 years when accompanied by an adult buying the same pass.
Besides downhill skiing, La Thuile has a small cross-country ski circuit. There are ample opportunities for snowshoeing and walks along local trails. For those who do not want to ski every day there are buses to the town of Aosta, known for its weekly market, and Courmayeur for some retail therapy. La Thuile is a seriously under-rated resort.
